Parallel Campaign Speeches
That's what Jon Stewart called last night's "debate". To paraphrase alka-seltzer, "I can't believe I watched the whole thing."
While Amie couldn't bear to join me on the couch (she's taken up an already-defeated "the whole thing's fixed!" position), I struggled through an attempt to listen with open ears. Yeah, I've been firmly in the "anyone but Bush" camp, and an over-staged "discussion" isn't likely going to change that, but I wanted to be fully informed when the all-out spin started, when each campaign declared their guy the victor, and when my fellow bloggers discussed who won the debate.
Then something unexpected happened. As the questions came and the responses went, I found I was actually allowing myself to believe that John Kerry can win the presidency. And not only that, I started imagining he's a guy that could maybe implement some meaningful change when he gets there. I won't go so far as to say that I "like" Kerry yet, and my general suspicion of long-term D.C. politicians still stands, but I don't need to like him. I need to believe he can head us in the right direction, I need to believe he can help us put the Dubya Debacle behind us, to consign Cheney, Rove, and the rest of his administration to the history books. And I'm just about there.
It's refreshing to wake this morning and be a little less "anyone but Bush", and a little more "John Kerry".
