Monday, October 24, 2005 Mp3s: The Dirty Three live in Boston The Dirty Three show at the Museum of Fine Arts here in Boston a couple weeks back was as beautifully moving as I'd hoped, made even moreso by an opening solo set by Chris Brokaw. If forced to complain, the only one I've got ends up being praise: the night was too short. Even D3 violinist Warren Ellis (no, not that one) was surprised by how quickly it passed, asking the audience what time it was and realizing the end was near. The appeal of the non-club setting disappeared when he remarked that the cut-off time was a mere 9:45, and the curfew undoubtedly denied us more than just a few songs... we got far less of the between-song rambles he's known for. I got the impression they'd have played all night if allowed, and though Ellis started off the set saying that requests would eventually be welcomed, we never did have a chance. A bit of a bummer given the infrequency of U.S. visits from their home of Australia, and the fact that this tour was a short eight dates. Still, too many cities missed out on the experience entirely, so I'll quit with the griping and get to the sharing... ![]() The Dirty Three live at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston Sunday, October 16th, 2005 (files removed on 1/5/2006) 1. intro 2. Cinder 3. Ever Since 4. interlude 5. The Restless Waves 6. Sea Above, Sky Below 7. Amy 8. The Zither Player 9. Everything's Fucked 10. Sad Sexy 11. Sue's Last Ride The D3 lineup of Ellis, drummer Jim White, and guitarist Mick Turner was enhanced this time around by Califone's Jim Becker, who added some bass, mandolin, and violin of his own. Studio versions of about half the songs above can be found on their new Touch & Go record, 'Cinder', with a couple from 1998's 'Ocean Songs', one from 1996's 'Horse Stories', and even a track from their 1995 self-titled album. You'll find a few mp3s linked through those album pages, and you can check out a video for the new song 'Great Waves' as well. Y'know, all that too-short-set stuff said, I still wouldn't have traded a single Chris Brokaw song for an extra Dirty Three number, and I'll be sharing up his stellar solo set next week. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and pick up Brokaw's excellent new album, 'Incredible Love', which is officially out tomorrow on 12xu records. At the very least, take a listen to the new mp3 for 'Move', and check out his long list of upcoming shows. He'll be touring with a full band, and sharing many dates with American Analog Set.
