Mp3s: live Aberdeen City, Essex Green, Shout Out Louds, The Standard, & Kingsbury Manx

My three-day marathon of live music, which began with the already-shared Clogs & Bell Orchestra MFA show, continued later that Friday night over at TT the Bears in Cambridge. It was the cd release party for Aberdeen City's debut full-length, 'The Freezing Atlantic', and the band nearly plowed through the album start to finish, only interrupting the sequence with the unreleased 'This Is Our Problem Tonight'. Running through the disc track-for-track was an cool gesture given the occasion, although the drunken friday night crowd was hard to take during the rare quiet numbers. Doubtful those will be heard much in future setlists, but it was nice to see them performed just once.

A few songs from the evening...

God Is Gonna Get Sick Of Me (live)
In Combat (live)
This Is Our Problem Tonight (live)

The following night was the Essex Green / Shout Out Louds show over at the Paradise. The first thing you'll notice is that the mp3s below sound ass-eriffic compared to the stuff I usually offer up , and the blame for that can be squarely set on whoever was doing sound that night. A bad mix, all high endy and feedbacky and just, well, off. The second thing you might notice is that, wow, that's one noisy freakin' crowd. Again, that's what you get with a Saturday night in Boston and a headliner that's getting lots of play on 'modern rock radio'. The Shout Out Louds brought out the drunken louts, and I had to listen to too many nattily dressed himbos try to pick up too many dye-job bimbos right in the middle of songs. Didn't matter where I tried to position myself, the phonies followed. I've ranted enough about crowd noise in this space, so ya'll know the drill. The Paradise that night was far from one, but the Green and the SOLs still played well, and it's worth sharing up a couple songs from each...

The Essex Green

Mrs. Bean (live)
Cardinal Points (live)

'Cardinal Points' will likely be found on the Essex Green's next album, which should be out on Merge Records early next year, and 'Mrs. Bean' is an older song from their now-out-of-print 1999 debut on the sadly-defunct Kindercore label, titled 'Everything Is Green'. Click that very link for a studio mp3 of 'Mrs. Bean', along with the title track.

The Shout Out Louds

live at the Paradise, Boston, MA
Saturday, November 5th, 2005

(files removed 2/1/06)

Wish I Was Dead Pt. 2 (live)
Streams Of Whiskey (live Pogues cover)

As you'll hear in the intro preceeding the song, covers are a true rarity for the Shout Out Louds, so that Pogues number is a treat. The other song, 'Wish I Was Dead Pt. 2', is a b-side that can be found in studio form on the 'Very Loud' EP.

Sunday night brought me back to TTs once again for a far different experience to the packed house of two days earlier. It was a criminally under-attended tour stop for The Standard and The Kingsbury Manx, who are sharing bills nationwide this fall. Sunday night shows are always pretty dicey, and if it wasn't for a rare Monday off and my love for the new Manx album, I might've been at home, too, especially after the musical overload of the previous 48 hours. But I'm glad I made it out, as it was my first exposure to The Standard (their set motivated me to pick up their latest disc, 'Albatross'), and the mellow Manx set was the perfect bookend to my weekend. Some songs from each...

The Standard

live at TT the Bears, Cambridge, MA
Sunday, November 6th, 2005

(files removed 2/1/06)

Closed Rooms (live)
Little Green (live)

The proper versions of both those songs can be found on The Standards latest album, 'Albatross'.

The Kingsbury Manx

live at TT the Bears, Cambridge, MA
Sunday, November 6th, 2005

(files removed 2/1/06)

Pageant Square (live)
And What Fallout! (live)
I0008 (live)

'Pageant Square' was a nice surprise, as it's the first Manx song I'd ever heard, being the first song on their 2000 self-titled debut. The other two tracks can be found on their new disc, entitled 'The Fast Rise and Fall of the South'.

Next Monday: If all goes well, I'll be offering up some live American Analog Set from this coming Wednesday night. Another evening at TTs, and I absolutely cannot f'in wait. I've never been less than moved by their live show, and I'm even more psyched after reading Frank's account of their Toronto stop. I'll letcha know how I made out when I post again on Thursday...
