Mp3s: Kristin Hersh + Tanya Donelly @ the Brattle - Part 1

One of my favorite live shows of last year was actually a two-fer that totalled six sets of music: Former Throwing Muses bandmates, and stepsisters, Tanya Donelly (who also fronted Belly, and helped start the Breeders) and Kristin Hersh (who's also in 50 Foot Wave) played two gigs at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Mass., and the shows included a solo set from each along with a truly special team-up on a batch of older TM faves.

If you've been reading the 'Nac for any length of time, you know that the Muses own space in a warm little corner of my heart, so I'll spare you any maudlin reflections and get to the songs. First up: The 6pm show, with Tanya and Kristin's first solo sets of the day, along with their first collaborative set. Next Monday I'll be sharing the entire 9PM second show.

And writing out this next bit might make it seem more real: This Friday I'll be a humble fly on the studio wall when Kristin Hersh and Throwing Muses drummer David Narcizo get together to record a few songs. I'll have my laptop with me and will be, barring any schedule changes or technical difficulties, liveblogging the afternoon, with words, photos, maybe even a little audio and video. Hopefully I'll just grab a seat, get the heck outta their way, and be able to share this rare experience with fellow fans.

So, yes, it's a Muses-heavy week here on the 'Nac. Enjoy this first fix, and come back Friday and next Monday for much more...

Some Kristin & Tanya linkage...
  • Kristin's official site, Wikipedia entry, and MySpace page. Tanya's official site, Wikipedia entry, and MySpace page.

  • Additional Audio: Be sure to check out the CASHmusic site, where Kristin is releasing her latest material, song-by-song, as pay-what-you-will downloads, and hit up the freemusic page at Throwing Music for some KH, TM, and 50 Foot Wave tracks. Tanya has also shared some free music, in the form of the original demo recordings of songs that later became Belly's "Star" album.

  • Video: A Kristin Hersh YouTube search turns up official videos and live clips, as does a Tanya Donelly YT search. Get old skool with a Throwing Muses YT search as well. There are also a couple clips from the Brattle show I shared above, including Tanya doing "Low Red Moon" & "Dusted" and Kristin doing "Husk" & "Snakeface".

  • Photos: My Flickr-hosted shots from both Brattle shows are here. Check out a few full Flickr tag searches: Kristin, Tanya, & Throwing Muses.

  • Listen to any and all 'Nac-hosted Mp3s at the Hype Machine.

  • the fine print... If anyone has an issue with these Mp3s being made available, just let me know (my contact info in the 'nac faq). Live sets recorded with a Sony ECM-719 mic and a Sony MZ-RH10 minidisc, converted to .wav and then edited to 192kbps Mp3s. Files are made available for a limited time, and are not reposted once removed.
