Free Songs On A Stormy Sunday
An end-of-the-wet-weekend post to share all sorts of free n' legal MP3s that have been bouncing around my headphones and brain lately, most of which you'll be able to hear played live in the Boston area sometime soon, and a couple of which are world premieres. Kinda. Maybe. Release and show info included... [MP3]: Travels - "Smile"Stunning preview track from the Somerville, MA duo's forthcoming third full-length, "Robber On The Run", due out on June 10th from Own Records. I'm fortunate to have heard the whole thing, and whenever I'm sure they can't top themselves, well, they go ahead and do it.
Travels' next live appearance is on Friday, April the 16th at PA's Lounge in Somerville with headliners Guillermo Sexo, Freddie T & the People (ex-Hoover/June of 44/The Crownhate Ruin), and Ghost Box Orchestra. Now there's a lineup for ya. [MP3] The Consulate General - "What Time Is Now"Another preview track, this one closely connected to another (former) Boston-area duo. The short story: Alex Chen is 1/2 of wonderful electro-pop twosome Boy In Static, who after leaving Boston for a brief stay in San Francisco, headed to Sweden and recorded a solo project as The Consulate General, recruiting guests stars like Antoine Bedard (of Montag), John Chao (of Misha), Ryan Fritch (of Sole & The Skyrider Band), and former Slowdive drummer Simon Scott (yes, Slowdive). The resulting album, "Person Number", arrives on April 6th courtesy of Circle Into Square / Fake Four Records. [MP3] The Cush - "The Vigilant Ones"[VIDEO] The Cush - "The Vigilant Ones"As someone who lived and breathed everything Burlington, Vermont for most of his life, and left because of a lull in good bands and a rock-show scene (ok, and for a girl), it pained me that The Cush showed up in town after I left. Were I still there, it's a band I would have seen often, and trumpeted throughout the land. But having fled the BVT to the BOS in 1998, it took a hometown visit a few years later to discover them in an upstairs Winooski apartment space early in the decade. Instant love. Here we are almost ten years later, and the band (at the core, a married duo) is releasing their third full-length (out April 20th) titled "Between The Leaves". I absolutely adore this first taste. They make me miss Burlington, where this album has been available for months.
The Cush plays next at The Living Room in NYC on April 2nd. Be there on my behalf. [MP3] Slowest Runner - "A Blind Captain..."One of those bands that forces you to abbreviate in order to maintain proper line justification (I'm looking at you, "Tim and Sam..."), the above should actually read as follows: (The) Slowest Runner (In All The World) - "A Blind Captain, A Whispered Portent, An Infirm Navigator". Thanks to an introductory email and a wonderful session on the indespensible Band In Boston podcast (shout-out to Jen + Andy!), I have fallen hard for Montreal/NYC instrumental combo TSRIATW (easier, right? nope.).
I know bands generally bristle when compared to other bands (and I always hesitate to do so), but there is such a Rachels vibe here that I cannot resist the mention. It's absolutely beautiful, and so worth hearing, especially given its total freeness. Yes, it's free to stream at the BiB site, and even if it wasn't, I would pay muchly. Own it officially by visiting the Grinding Tapes site. The above song is my favorite track from the their "Flophouse Session" EP. [MP3] Ted Leo + the Pharmacists - "The Mighty Sparrow"I'm going to assume you've already heard this, right? Multiple times, at least. Ted + his company's latest notch in their rock-n-roll belt, "The Brutalist Bricks", came out last week, so it should already have gotten several dozen spins on your iPod/Turntable/Winamp/Boombox/whatever. No?! Well, if you're not already on board, there's not a lot I can do for you. Please, seek help.
Ted and his Pharmacists will headline the Paradise in Boston on Saturday, April 6th with Screaming Females (!) and Obits (!!) opening. Hello, sell out (buy tix, seriously). I mean, jeez. [MP3] Wye Oak - "I Hope You Die"Is it possible to have a crush on a couple? If I wasn't already married, I'd totally ask the Baltimore-based duo known as Wye Oak to marry me. A musical marriage. Because I love them. Truly. I fell with the first note, but harder when I got to know Jen + Andy a little bit. Despite the fact that they write better songs and play better shows than most of today's so-called 'rock stars', they are anything but. So refreshing.
Instead of over-hyping a new release that could not possibly be over-hyped, they sprang a brand new EP on us a few days ago with no warning whatsoever. The very definition of a surprise present. Download the "My Neighbor / My Creator" EP from Merge, or pre-order the CD if you're (like me) into the physical thing. They've been playing lead-off semi-title track "My Neighbor" live since last summer, and all I could think was "Oh, I can't wait until this is released". Well, that time has come. [MP3] The New Pornographers - "Your Hands (Together)"Not a lot I can say about this song... it's Canadian superstars The New Pornographers. And it's rockin'. It may, in fact, be more rockin' than anything on their entire last album, which is no small statement. Their new long-player, "Together", arrives on May 4th, 2010. And I want to hear the whole thing. Right now. [MP3] Serena Maneesh - "I Just Want To See Your Face"It's been almost four years since Sweden's S-M gave us their self-titled debut (and since they blew my mind with a 2006 TT the Bears live set), but if you were worried they'd switch gears for the follow-up, have no fear. "S-M 2: Abyss in B Minor", which comes out on March 22nd from the esteemed 4AD record label, has all of the MBV-inspired vocal and guitars, and throws a serious dose of Moonshake-style rhythm action. For those familiar with Moonshake, this should trigger some excitement. The fact that they are returning to the confines of TT the Bears on Sunday night, April 4th (with PoBP@H pals The Depreciation Guild and Black Fortress of Opium) should trigger more of the same. [MP3] Nada Surf - "Electrocution" (Bill Fox cover)A couple of things you should be aware of from the onset: The new Nada Surf album, "If I Had A Hi-Fi" is all covers. And if you want it, you need to go see them live. Severe punishment, I know. Oh, and it's also a palindrome. The merch table of their upcoming tour, which kicks off with a sold out show on March 25th at NYC's Bowery Ballroom, is in fact the only place you can grab that all-covers disc (which includes songs written by Depeche Mode, the Go-Betweens, Kate Bush, Spoon, and more). So be there, or hang tight for details on where you can buy it later. The trio hits the Paradise in Boston on April 3rd (tickets here) with Dawn Landes & the Hounds. [MP3] Walter Schreifels - "Arthur Lee's Lullaby"While we wait for a brand new Rival Schools album (yes, it's happening), we're given lead-guy Walter's first official solo effort, "Open Letter To A Scene" (out May 4th on Academy Fight Song) which most-resembles 2004's Walking Concert full-lengther. It's essentially a way for Mr. Schreifels to get his pop-rocks off, his more low-key troubador side. That's not to say it's all-acoustic, for there are a couple of fairly rockin' numbers on here, but for the most part these are catchy, strummy diversions along the lines of WC's "Audrey". And that's not at all a bad thing. It should tide us over quite well indeed.
For those heading to Austin with a hankerin' to see Walter in person, he'll be playing solo on Friday, March 19th at the AFS/Dine Alone SxSW Party at the Iron Gate, and with Rival Schools on Saturday, March 20th at Red 7 Patio. And I'll only be a couple thousand miles away. Sigh. Ok, that's about enough for now. Let's end this with a " to be continued...", and a hat tip to Deep Ellum for the coffee and beer that fueled this entry... Labels: freesongs

[MP3s] In Memory of Mark Linkous: Sparklehorse in Boston
When I woke up too-early on Sunday morning, looking forward to another unseasonably warm late-winter day Boston day, I was nowhere near prepared for the news that Mark Linkous had taken his own life. Not that I'd ever be. The way we hear about these things nowadays has become so impersonal, so completely sterile, that we're all left to process it pretty much on our own. Just a decade ago, we'd get a phone call, maybe an email from someone close to us, or even see a friend on the street who'd pass along the sad news... and we could share our loss in more than 140 characters. Now, text just shows up in our RSS reader or Tweetdeck window: "R.I.P. Mark Linkous" - a punch to the heart and a frantic clicking for confirmation. That can't be true, can it? And somewhere far away, an anonymous stranger changes the Wikipedia entry from " Sparklehorse is a band led by..." to "Sparklehorse was a band led by...". Instantly, all his songs, and everything they mean to me, come rushing in. Even though I was relatively late to world of Sparklehorse, discovering him just before the brilliant "It's A Wonderful Life" almost a decade ago, when I fell for Mark's songs I fell pretty hard. I played that album incessantly, taking breaks only to listen to its two predecessors, and I felt so completely connected. That was the thing about so much of his work: There was an intimacy that, no matter who you were or when you found him, it felt like he was writing songs just for you. An easy quietness that carried so much emotional weight, warm production that found a rare, magical balance between a big studio and a tiny bedroom. It was grand and personal all at once. Elliott Smith. Vic Chesnutt. And now Mark Linkous. True artists that contributed more to the beauty of the world than I, and most others, can ever hope to. Men who deeply enriched the lives of people they would never meet. Few of us can ever truly understand the pain that brought them to take their own lives, but I know I'm not alone in wishing I'd had a selfish moment to sit down with them and beg: "Please, please don't leave us." Please don't make the world a lonelier, lesser place. But it is today. All I can do is write a few words and share this Sparklehorse set from three years ago. It was the only time I got to see him play, after waiting such a long time, and despite my high expectations and Mark's raging flu, I left satisfied. No, it's not his best performance, but it was Sparklehorse. And for me, that was enough. Others do more to honor the memory of Mr. Linkous than I can: Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz shared some beautiful words alongside his own cover of Sparklehorse's "Gold Days". And Sunday morning, under the same dark cloud I was sitting under, Drew O'Doherty wrote and recorded an original titled "So Long". Life may be a little less wonderful today, but those tributes sure do help.

2009: My Favorite (Boston-made) Music
As I mentioned in my list of favorite full-lengths released last year, there were so many that came from bands based here in the Boston-area that I thought I'd spotlight them in their very own post. To be completely clear, though: This is far from some lesser-category of local releases, but a list of 10 albums that sit proudly alongside my other favorite 20 - the fact that they originate from Boston would be entirely irrelevant if it didn't give me some major hometown pride. And allow me to see these bands play live a lot more than most of you. And yes, I do realize it's March already, and far too late for such a list. I am shamed. Better late than never, right? So here they are, in alphabetical order, my favorite albums of 2009 that just happened to be created by Boston-area bands, along with a few shorter local releases that made my year better. I've included a free n' legal MP3 with each (all gathered in a .zip file at the bottom), and have linked the label names to where you can buy the full-lengths, in the event you're compelled to give these talented souls some cash (hint: you are). Arms and Sleepers - "Matador"(on Fake Chapter Records) My favorite ambient album of '09, from a Boston/Portland duo that's been around for awhile and finally made it onto my radar with this album's release in November. Collaborators abound on "Matador", including this gorgeous duet with Catherine Worsham of Uzi & Ari, which also features a bit of guitar work from Mona Elliott of Travels... [MP3] Arms and Sleepers - "The Architekt"
The Beatings - "Late Season Kids"(on Midriff Records) I wrote a bit about the triumph of persistence that is The Beatings' sixth album right here, and it still rings true. In case you missed it, be sure to freely download the entire (and entirely excellent) Midriff Records 2009 Sampler on which this song also resides... [MP3] The Beatings - "All Things You've Been Missing"
Caspian - "Tertia"(on The Myelene Sheath) My inclusion of Beverly's Caspian on this list should come as no surprise to anyone who has been reading the 'Nac for awhile. They continue to grow, stretching the bounds of instrumental post-rock, writing songs that may shine on record, but are near-blinding in a live setting. I love that their label - The Mylene Sheath - treats us to limited edition, hi-quality Caspian vinyl, and that they'll also be putting out deluxe CD reissues of the bands' previous work in a couple weeks. Go here for details and pre-order action. [MP3] Caspian - "Of Foam and Wave"
The Channels - "Cold Comfort"( self-released) This album took me by surprise, only because I came upon it in a most unusual and unassuming way - it was handed to me by my temporary bandmate, guitarist/singer/cartoonist Rob Sergel, on the night of our first and only show together (so far?) as the Marvelous Marbles. I had no idea what to expect when I popped it into my computer a couple weeks later - but within a couple listens I considered myself very, very lucky. Rob and his friend Ben have crafted a bedroom pop gem, somber in subject, uplifting in execution, and waiting to be discovered by a whole hell of a lot more like-minded listeners. Y'know, as much fun as I had playing with my MM bandmates, I wouldn't have predicted I'd walk away from the experience holding onto one of my favorite albums of the year. I've shared one track with Rob's permission below, but you can stream the entirety of "Cold Comfort" right here. [MP3] The Channels - "Don't Come Over"
Hallelujah the Hills - "Colonial Drones"(on Misra Records) Hallelujah the Hills' second album damn well delivered on the promise made by their first, proving yet again that literate songs need not be boring - hell, they can be downright catchy. They've found the perfect studio balance, layering dense, detailed instrumentation in a blanket of warm production that sounds like no one else - you hear an HtH song and you know it's them. Here's one to make you dance... [MP3] Hallelujah the Hills - "Blank Passports"
Mean Creek
"The Sky (Or The Underground)"(on Old Flame Records) When I first heard this, Mean Creek's second album, I knew I liked it quite a bit, but that I'd need to spend more time discovering just how much. Before that happened, I caught the band downstairs at the Middle East as part of the Mark Sandman Memorial Concert, and was frankly flat-out blown away. That live performance, the power of it, the perfect sound mix and harmonies of that afternoon set... well, it brought even greater life to the studio versions and elevated the songs in my ears. I'm generally not a fan of music-related awards contests and such, but this is one I can get behind. [MP3] Mean Creek - "The Sky (Or The Underground)"
The Novel Ideas - "The Sky Is A Field"( self-released) I said it back in December, and I'll say it again: Songs that make me swoon. Their introductory email hit my inbox just when I needed it most, in October, when various life-related dominoes started falling around me, and this album helped keep my head up. Still does. Stream the whole thing here. [MP3] The Novel Ideas - "The Sky"I'm also compelled to mention that Novel Ideas' member Alex Caplow has released a pretty stunning new album titled "Real Life Color" under the name Magic Man. The songs, co-written and recorded with his old friend Sam Lee (of The Tumbled Sea), came together while the two were working together on organic farms last summer in France. More than worth a free download right here. I'll be spending a lot more time with this one as winter becomes spring.
Pants Yell! - "Received Pronunciation"(on Slumberland Records) The simple fact is that " Not Wrong", the next-to-last track on "Received Pronunciation", is hands down my favorite song of 2009. And without the 'Boston' qualifier, either. I don't like to settle on absolute faves, because my mood changes too much for me to be sure of such things, but over and over again I come back to this simple, understated, perfect little gem that gets me every single time. And it sits on this album among so many other pop treasures, showing that these three guys can craft songs that add up to so much more than the sum of their parts. [MP3] Pants Yell! - "Cold Hands"
Taxpayer - "Don't Steal My Night Vision"(on Lunch Records) A bona fide rock record, refreshingly self-assured without being at-all cheezy. There are far too many bands in this town who cross that line, who are all cocky showmanship but no substance - who have the swagger but not the songs. Taxpayer ain't one of those bands. There are also a ton of bands here who have some good music, but settle for a mediocre vocalist because he plays guitar and writes the songs. Well, Taxpayer ain't that either, thanks to singer/guitarist Jared Marsh, who has the confidence and the range to handle what's going on behind him. Like Mean Creek, these guys deserved all the accolades thrown their way in '09. [MP3] Taxpayer - "We Have Arrived"
You Can Be A Wesley - "Heard Like Us"( self-released) I've professed my love for the Wesleys many times before, and their debut full-lengther was pretty much guaranteed a spot on my yearly faves list from the get go. Can't wait to see what's up their sleeves for a follow-up. [MP3] You Can Be A Wesley - "Creatures"Before I put a period on the end of my musical 2009, here are a few other local non-long-players that occupied my ears last year, and a couple that came out last year but I've only recently started digging... I really dug the Christians & Lions "Bird's Milk" EP, which you can download for free (and under a Creative Commons license) at the bottom of this page. Here's the title track...
I fell quickly for Girlfriends after hearing the five songs from their debut cassette EP, and fell even further after I saw them play Great Scott in January. They are, in fact, the real deal. And they happen to share a member (and label) with Christians & Lions. Which I didn't realize until after I got into both bands independently. Seems Ben Potrykus has my number. Go listen.
I sang the praises of Dylan In The Movies in that December fave songs post, and I can't resist an opportunity to do so again. The long-in-the-making next album is now titled "Josephine If You Only Knew", named for what is now the title track, and it'll be out on American Laundromat this year. Given how much I love this song, how much I played it last year, and how great the new stuff they played on last week's KEXP studio session was (seriously, go listen), my anticipation has reached new heights. Added bonus: One of the songs on the album features backing vocals from the Watson Twins and the track "Girl With the Black Tights" was co-written with Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, Breeders, + Belly, of course). Download the "Josephine" single here, and keep an eye on the American Laundromat site for updates on the album's eventual release.
Age Rings are dead; long live Hot Protestants. With a lineup shift, the new name emerged last summer when the band played their first show at Great Scott and offered up an excellent 4-song EP. A second 4-song blast quickly followed in October, and you can download both (naming your own price) right here. Full length on the way? Here's hoping. Here's the first track from that first EP...
As promised, here's a .zip file with all the songs linked above. For your further edification (assuming you haven't had enough reading), have a look at the Metro's look back at local music in 2009, with contributions from writers Linda Laban, Luke O'Neil, Selene Angier, Pat Healy, G. Valentino Ball, and Nolan Gawron. Globe writer Jonathan Perry shared his own list of '09 local faves on January 1st. Yes, the man's punctuality (not to mention his writing) puts me to shame. Next year I'll do better. Well, unless I don't.

Monday Morning Miscellany (an anniversary, a nomination, + a couple of worthy causes)
Been awhile since I've done one of these random, multi-subject missives (blame Twitbook and a severe lack of personal downtime), but there are a handful things worth mentioning here in a proper post. A couple are entirely self-serving, others are far from it, but all have been on my mind lately to varying degrees... With little fanfare, save for some kind Twitter responses and a bunch of Facebook 'likes', the 'Nac passed its official 10-year anniversary exactly a week ago. Yes, on the 15th of February, in the year 2000, I registered the domain name bradleysalmanac.com while sitting in my old office at Mass Pike exit 17 (TPS represent!). A decade in and it is, of course, a very different beast from when it began... took me awhile to find my footing and my focus (well, that's assuming you believe I've found either). In the alternate universe where I have no day job, no family, a clone, and a staff of filthy assistants, I threw a big honkin' party with some of my favorite bands, a whole lot of friends, and a bunch of free stuff. In this one, I stopped at Deep Ellum on the way home for work and had a raised a pint to myself. In other words, it was a Monday. Huzzah!
In case you weren't aware, or hadn't taken notice of the little blue square in the upper right over there, for some inexplicable reason the Almanac has been nominated in the "Best Boston Blog" category of the 2010 Boston Phoenix Readers Poll. Which resulted in equal parts total flattery and complete confusion. Y'see, not only is this the first year, I believe, that the category has been changed from "Best Boston Blog/Podcast" to simply "Best Boston Blog", but it may be the first time a music-related site has been among the nominees. And not just one, but three of them. How cool is that?
If you are so inclined (if you're reading this, I'm hoping you're doing so because you enjoy it, not out of some strange masochistic compulsion), go vote for me (and make sure you click 'submit vote' then 'skip to finish'). According to the fine print, you can vote once a day, so do with that info what you will. No, I have no idea when the polls close, but I'm assuming that'll happen about 30 seconds before I click 'publish' on this post.
And here's some wishful thinking, directed at the Phoenix folks: Given that three music blogs ended up in this year's Reader's Poll, how about a new category in the 2010 Phoenix Best Music Poll for "Best Boston Music Blog"? Spread the love around a bit more, y'know? I'm obviously biased, but with the number of fine music-related websites we've got around this town, maybe it's time.
Speaking of the Phoenix, their On The Download blog asked me to comment on the recent so-called #musicblogicide2010 (for the layperson: Google/Blogger deleted the entirety of a few music blogs due to some questionable copyright complaints). So, I commented. Go ahead and read my rambling, as if you don't get enough of that here already. And now, on to a couple of causes that actually deserve your time and attention... It warmed my heart last month when I learned that Al Crisafulli had decided to restart his wonderful Jersey-based label Dromedary Records (the original run was from 1993 to 2000), and it warmed my heart even further when I saw one of the first new releases would be "Make the Load Lighter: Indie Rock for Haiti". The 16-track, digital-only release includes old and new contributions from Dromedary artists like the Mommyheads, Cuppa Joe, + Footstone, as well as Moviola and Jennifer Convertible. Well worth a purchase, moreso because all of the proceeds will go to Vwa Ayiti ("Voice of Haiti"), which is "an all-volunteer organization that has been doing environmentally-conscious community development projects in Haiti since 2005. Right now all donations are going directly to providing medical care to the quake victims." So get over to the Dromedary site and order up, or look it up at Amazon , eMusic, or iTunes.
A cause that is far, far closer to my heart and home (and those who know me well know why) is the fight against cancer. Since late last year, I've been following the creation and launch of TargetCancer and their new Right Track Tunes website. And I quote..."TargetCancer promotes the development of lifesaving treatment protocols for rare cancers. Through fundraising, outreach, and advocacy, TargetCancer supports those living with rare cancers and funds research initiatives at the forefront of cancer treatment — efforts that treat the individual as well as the disease." It's the rare forms of cancer that, by definition, get short shrift in the donation and attention game. But there are so many so called "rare" forms that they become a larger sample when combined, and they need the research and support that all other cancer fighters (I refuse to use the word 'victims') need.
The spark for TargetCancer's formation came from the fight that Bostonian Paul Poth put up, and regrettably lost, with his own rare form of cancer. I highly encourage you to set aside a few minutes and read about Paul in his touching Boston Globe obituary right here. It'll make you wish, at the least, that you'd met the guy, and will certainly make you wish he was still around. But he is, really, though the work of those close to him and TargetCancer.
The organization's first major push comes in the form of Right Track Tunes, a site that allows you to donate and download tracks from a wide variety of generous artists, including Boston's own Drug Rug, Buffalo Tom, Mike Viola, and the Gravel Pit, as well as artists like Ween, Linda Thompson, Dean & Britta, The Donnas, Cowboy Junkies, and Weezer. That roster will only grow from here, once the word gets out some more. So get over there, get with the giving, and get with the listening. Follow them on Twitter to get the latest, and keep tabs on new songs contributed to the cause. And three very quick tips before I go... It is absolutely ridiculous that there are still tickets available for the Clientele / Field Music show at Great Scott next month. Are you people not paying attention or something? The Clientele set will make you swoon, and while I've yet to see Field Music, their just-released album "Measure " is pretty much blowing me away (stream it here). Either of these bands could pack larger places on their own, so when it does sell out, don't say I didn't warn ya.
Also very surprising? That you can still buy tickets for the March 1st premiere of director Jonathan Demme's new Neil Young concert film at Brookline's Coolidge Corner Theatre. I mean, not only will Jonathan Demme himself be there to intro the "Neil Young Trunk Show" and host a post-screening Q+A, but his friend Robyn Hitchcock is coming along to play some songs. No, that is not your average, everyday film premiere. It's part of the Coolidge's celebration of Demme's career and his selection as the 2010 Coolidge Award recipient. Lots of cool stuff going on around that event, but this screening is extra-cool.
And lastly, I implore you to go see the final night of John Shade's very special February residency at the Armory in Somerville this Thursday. I caught the first one, and left in a string-induced stupor. As excellent as the songs from his debut album ("All You Love Is Need") are, they go to another place entirely when accompanied by the Neave String Quartet. The arrangements that Zack Hickman (who joins in on stand-up bass) pulled together are nothing short of magical, and witnessing them in such a small space (the Armory's cozy front room) felt like a gift. Rounding out the lineup all month has been Leo Blais and different guests each week, and this final night brings Bo Barringer (from MEandJOANCOLLINS and Mascara) and Adena Atkins. Some strong advice, though: Buy advance tickets. Word has been spreading about the wonderfulness, and last week was a solid sell-out. Alright, that's it from me. The workweek is already well underway...

The Magnetic Fields in Boston (aka Stephin Merritt vs. Will Sheff)
The second show of The Magnetic Fields' two-night stand at Boston's Wilbur Theatre was full of memorable moments, and for anyone who's seen them before, you know I'm not just talking about the music. The back-and-forth between Stephin Merritt and bandmate/manager/longtime friend Claudia Gonson ranges anywhere from awkwardly amusing to flat-out funny, and we had a whole bunch of that between the 30-or-so songs they treated us to on Thursday night. From Claudia's opinion on the Who playing the Superbowl (" It must have been a recession special. Aren't those guys like 70 or something?") to discussion of their intermission ritual (tea-warming and coke-snorting?), to the best place to avoid vampires (gay bars, because there are so many mirrors), the unplanned asides can bring as many laughs as the dry wit in Merritt's lyrics. But one diatribe in particular struck me, mostly because I'm an Okkervil River fan. Here's what Mr. Merritt had to say before the band kicked into "We Are Having A Hootenanny", off their just-released "Realism"... Stephin Merritt: So I was just buying this hat, in a clothing store - as you can tell, not a wrinkle on it - and they were playing an album by a band called Aqua-something River?
Claudia Gonson: Okkervil River.
SM: ... Okkervil River. And their instrumentation was shockingly similar to not only the Magnetic Fields new album, but... this show. And I have been telling interviewers how proud we were that nobody has ever had this lineup or anything like it, for two months or something like that, six or seven times a day. Oh yes, who has ever used the 8-string ukulele, acoustic guitar, cello, pianette, and auto-harp together?... Well, they [Okkervil River] have, I think it's auto-harp, cello, pianette, acoustic guitar, 8-string ukulele, and... mandolin, or something like that.
CG: The moral of the story is... don't buy hats.
SM: Yes, don't buy hats, before you play a show.
CG: Don't do anything before you play a show. Including eat gigantic Chinese food.
SM: Yes, that either. But also, they had quite good lyrics.
CG: What?
SM: They had quite good lyrics. Which was a problem for me.
(audience laughs)
SM: I'm used to saying "I'm not just the best lyricist in the English language, I'm the only lyricist in the English language".
(more laughter)
SM: But now there's competition on both fronts. I think they have industrial spies they've sent out...
(he looks suspiciously towards auto-harpist/vocalist Shirley Simms to his right)
SM: ... and it might be Shirley.
(and Shirley stares slyly back) Gotta wonder if Okkervil River's Will Sheff had a serious case of burning ear on Thursday night as he received that fairly impressive long-distance compliment. Also pointedly amusing, after the band descended into a downward spiral of banter during the encore, was this quick one... CG: We're playing to 2300 people in a couple of days (ed: tonight at Brookyn's BAM), and we're going to get our act together. Be professional. We're going to dress up and shut up.
SM: Maybe it's better if you all pretend we ended after the second set. If there are any bloggers out there... (pauses)
CG: Please forget the last 10 minutes or so.
SM (continuing): ...get a life. OH SNAP!

CD Giveaway: Midlake's "The Courage Of Others"
After a wait of nearly four years since their breakthrough full-length, "The Trials of Van Occupanther", Midlake returned with last Tuesday's arrival of their third album, "The Courage of Others" . Criticism has been wide-ranging, from unqualified raves (see the AVClub) to flat-out dismissals (from you know who), and while I fall somewhere in the middle, I'm definitely heading in the direction of 'rave'. Though I was immediately impressed upon Van Occupanther's release, it did take awhile for its magic to truly charm me, so I'm hesitant to judge this new one too quickly. It has the disadvantage of increased expectations, and if you come looking for the catchier, more upbeat side of the band (a la signature song, " Roscoe"), you'll have to look elsewhere. The hooks here are subtler, more drawn out... sometimes hard to find at all. "The Courage Of Others" is a drastically moodier affair - the band takes a fair amount of risk within the sonic box they've placed themselves in. During the long wait for the album I wondered, given that every review of their previous one mentioned the same 70's touchstones (Fleetwood Mac, Fairport Convention, etc), if the band took so long in an over-thought effort to reinvent themselves. Well, the answer is very simply no, but they've definitely gone darker and deeper, and are taking hits for it. For every band that tries too hard to change up their formula and fails hard, there are those that work within what they know (and what many love them for) to craft a worthy follow-up. I think that's where Midlake is at, coming up with a collection of songs that is just different enough from its predecessor to avoid redundancy, yet still rub a few followers the wrong way. Thanks to the folks at Filter, I've got a couple copies of Midlake's "The Courage of Others" on CD to hand out to 'Nac readers. If you reside in the continental U.S., drop an email to giveaways [at] bradleysalmanac [dot] com entitled "MIDLAKE" before this coming Friday, February 12th at 9am. I'll fire up the randomizer and pick two winners that day, then get in touch for mailing addresses. As the ceaseless (and increasingly rapid) consume/judge/move-on cycle that is today's internet-music-review-machine chews new albums up and spits 'em out, I look forward to spending the rest of the winter letting this one sink in, and to Midlake's April 9th stop in Boston near the end up their upcoming U.S. tour. I remember very distinctly their visit to TT the Bears back in 2006, playing first of three bands, and how enamored I was of their live set. They headlined both the Middle East Upstairs and then the Paradise the following year, but haven't been back since. (and thanks to Kevin in the comments for setting me straight on those headlining gigs, both of which I missed. The 'Nac intern responsible for fact-checking has been sacked) Stream "The Courage Of Others" over at NPR, and if you're in the Boston area, stop by Newbury Comics, where I picked up the CD for a measly $7.99 (with a sticker on the front that ironically included previous praise from P4K). A nice surprise? Finding an insert inside with a download code for bonus track " Rose Of Dawn" (which easily measures up to the rest of the album) and a hi-res quicktime file of the Jason-Lee-directed teaser film above. Which could be looked at as an attempt to culturally balance out his work in the Chipmunk films. Labels: giveaways

Future Faves? Upcoming 2010 album releases...
As far as my ears are concerned, yesterday was the first major multi-album new music release day of 2010, so it's past time for my annual list of what I'm looking forward to in the months ahead. I've included albums with solid dates, some with ballpark estimates, a few that are mere whispers on the wind. Oh, and a couple of pure fantasies. A boy can dream, can't he? Keep in mind, this is not even close to a comprehensive rundown of what's supposed to be coming out - just the stuff I have high hopes for. If it's not on here, I'm either apathetic at best or totally unaware. That said, go ahead and let me know what you're looking forward to this year, and any guesses you have at surprises that might show up down the road... (note: Labels and release dates are U.S.-centric. And when available, label name links will send you to pre-order info for each album. So, y'know, go ahead and do that.
