Mp3s: Bloc Party live in Boston

Well, this week brings a recording that has sat unedited and unshared for far too long, but with the recent announcement of a bunch of new U.S. summer headlining dates for Bloc Party, I figured now was as good a time as any to post this live set from last year here in Boston.

There are a couple reasons the urge to share this up evaded me for so very long: 1) The sound mix at the Orpheum during their set varied wildly, so my audience recording suffers for it, and 2) After initially finding things to like about Bloc Party's "A Weekend In The City" (their sophomore follow-up to the absolutely ace debut of "Silent Alarm"), it simply did not settle in very well at all. I can't remember the last time I listened to it (I still always go to "Silent Alarm" for a BP fix), and hearing them play those brilliant 2005 songs alongside the 2007 tracks really brought the missteps home for me (a caveat: "I Still Remember" still gets me).

But I'm ready and willing for their next album to win me back, so let's hope some new songs get unveiled on those few summer dates, which are listed below.

Here's their Orpheum set in its entirety...

Some Bloc Party links...
  • The band's official site, MySpace page, Wikipedia entry, and Vice Records page.

  • Additional Audio: The band stopped by Boston's First Act Guitar Studio last year and performed a short acoustic set, and you can download three of those songs (scroll to the bottom). And here's a little extra something for you from late night teevee...

    Mp3: Bloc Party - "I Still Remember"
(live on Last Call, Friday, April 6th, 2007)

  • Video: Lots to be seen on their own video page, Bloc Party TV, and there's always a Bloc Party YouTube search.

  • Photos: My Flickr-hosted shots are all within this post, but you can check out a full Bloc Party Flickr tag search, or photos from that First Act acoustic session here.

  • Sleeping Policeman was at the Orpheum show as well, and shared some thoughts.

  • Upcoming tourdates:
    Aug. 1st - Chicago, IL @ Lollapalooza

Aug. 5th - Philadelphia, PA @ the Fillmore at the TLA

    Aug. 6th & 7th - New York, NY @ Webster Hall

    Aug. 9th - Baltimore, MD @ the V Festival
  • Listen to any and all 'Nac-hosted Mp3s at the Hype Machine.

  • the fine print... If anyone has an issue with these Mp3s being made available, just let me know (my contact info in the 'nac faq). Live sets recorded with a Sony ECM-719 mic and a Sony MZ-RH10 minidisc, converted to .wav and then edited to 192kbps Mp3s. Files are made available for a limited time, and are not reposted once removed.

Mp3s: Mates of State (on This American Life) in Boston

The televisual version of seminal NPR radio show This American Life returns this Sunday, May 4th, for a second season on Showtime. Live audiences got a taste of how the first season would translate when Ira Glass and his TAL crew took the show on the road for a tour entitled "What I Learned from Television". Regular contributors Sarah Vowell, David Rakoff, and Dan Savage told stories, and attendees (including our crowd at the Opera House in Boston) were shown part of a season one episode.

A highlight of this touring TAL ensemble was the presence of Connecticut-based duo Mates of State, who release their fifth album, "Re-arrange Us", on May 20th through Barsuk. On tour, the band provided musical interludes between spoken word performances, were interviewed by Glass, and closed the show with a thematically appropriate cover of OC theme song "California".

Here are the songs that Mates of State performed at the Boston show, including that Phantom Planet cover, and the song "Now", which will appear on "Re-arrange Us"...

Also this weekend, This American Life will broadcast the radio version of that very same tour, but you can already stream the entirety of the show on their website, or download it via itunes for a well-spent 95 cents. Included are the spoken word performances of those mentioned above, along with edited (but sonically-improved) recordings of those Mates of States songs.

For a full list of airdates for the second TV season of This American Life on Showtime, go here. To pre-order Mates of States' "Re-arrange Us" from Barsuk, keep an eye on this page. And for a complete list of Mates of States tourdates, visit here.

As ever, stream any and all 'Nac-hosted Mp3s at the Hype Machine.

Mp3s: Stratford Projects live in Somerville

A few weeks back, the on stage debut of Stratford Projects happened at Somerville's Abbey Lounge, and if I was in the audience instead of behind the drum kit, I'd have doubled the crowd. Ok, so that's a slight exaggeration... but that's what we get for a first-ever show near midnight on a Tuesday. It really wasn't about who was there (or, rather, who wasn't) to see us, though, but more about getting our feet wet as an under-rehearsed five-piece. Despite the count-on-one-hand crowd, a good time was had, and we pulled it off. Enough to maybe schedule a second show, despite our collectively busy personal lives.

I wasn't going to share my recording of this one, but a request-via-comment and a couple emails were enough to overcome the aversion of self-indulgence, or at least the potential fear of embarrassment (like I said, first show ever). So here it is: The songs of Michael Barrett (and a couple covers) as performed by Mike on guitar/vocals, Anna Jaysane-Darr on keys, Neil Cleary on guitar/backing vocals, Adam Boc on bass/backing vocals, and yours truly on drums.

The setlist includes songs pulled from Mike's Planting Seeds solo album, "Couches and Carpet" ("Beach Song", "Chill Out"), a couple from his first band Guppyboy ("New Orleans", "Overflow"), ones he wrote with his Essex Green pals in The Sixth Great Lake ("Everything Is White", "27 Forever", "Cannon Beach"), and a song from Essex Green guitarist Jeff Baron's never-released solo record ("The Ravenswood").

    Some Stratford Projects-related links...
  • The Stratford Projects site, home of all things Mike Barrett, the "Couches and Carpet" album info page, the Sixth Great Lake site, an archive of Guppyboy, the Eef site (the band Mike and I used to play in together), Neil Cleary's site, and the home of Jumprope, Adam Boc's old band (which was also on the Planting Seeds label).

  • Additional Audio: Download some unreleased Michael Barrett solo Mp3s, a whole bunch of Sixth Great Lake songs, a few Essex Green Mp3s, and some vintage live Essex Green (on WFMU in 2000) as well.

  • Photos: My few Flickr-hosted shots from the show (with an assist from a friend of Mike's who took a couple) are here.

  • As always, stream any and all 'Nac-hosted Mp3s at the Hype Machine.

  • the fine print... If anyone has an issue with these Mp3s being made available, just let me know (my contact info in the 'nac faq). Mp3s: Mission of Burma live for Burma

Here's something special to mark last week's release of the remastered and expanded definitive editions of Mission of Burma's influential early work...

When the big run of 'seminal' band reunions started up a few years back, I was mostly grateful to get a chance to see some faves I'd either been too young or too far away to catch in their prime. Naturally, my cynical side worried that I'd be seeing only pale shadows of some formerly brilliant selves... I feared hints of disappointment within the good fortune.

Well, those fears were obliterated about three songs into Mission of Burma's hometown reunion gig at the Paradise in mid-January of 2002. Mssrs. Miller, Conley, Prescott, & new sample/looping soundman Weston put on a show, and proved definitively that it's possible to return just as vital, energetic, and passionate as ever. Two solid post-reunion albums and dozens of performances later, MoB hasn't come close to milking or tarnishing their legacy, only strengthening it. Hell, just as they influenced the sound (or at least the independent aesthetic) of so many bands with their early-80s work, they may also have been a deciding factor in some of those very bands getting back together in recent years. Kind of a "if they can pull it off, maybe we can, too" sorta thing. And to be sure, there's been widely varying degrees of success among the reunited.

I figured that first reunion show would always rank as my favorite MoB performance -- could anything after measure up? I've seen 'em a number of times in subsequent years since, and while they've all been great, none had the impact of that Paradise gig -- until six years later, almost to the day, when they played a simpatico "Burma for Burma" benefit show at Allston's own Great Scott. The January 29th, 2008 show was held to raise funds and awareness for the U.S. Campaign for Burma, and if only a sliver of the crowd's enthusiasm translated into action for the cause, they did some good.

It was an intense, career-spanning, two-set performance that touched on the best of the old and the new MoB, with second-era songs measuring up to and sitting proudly beside more-than-25-year old tracks. With Great Scott's capacity of just under 250, it felt like the sold-out crowd was seeing something special, and the band treated the show that way. Peter Prescott's "Incredibles" t-shirt was apropos.

Here are Mp3s of the band's full "Burma for Burma" performance, and be sure to check the links below for some video clips as well (word from the stage was that the full concert recording was to be broadcast within Burma itself). As I share this, I'd also like to note that MoB is one of the gracious bands who allow their live sets to be openly recorded and shared, and specifically made available at the Live Music Archive (where I'll be posting higher quality files of this show soon The show below is now available there as well).

    Enjoy...

    Some Mission of Burma links...
  • Their official site, MySpace page, Wikipedia entry, and Matador Records page. Also visit the U.S. Campaign for Burma site while you're surfing and read up.

  • Additional Audio: As I mentioned above, MoB allows fans to share live show recordings at the Live Music Archive. Matador made Mp3s and actual .wav files of the remastered version of "Max Ernst" and the live version of "Weatherbox" available here. You can also check out the full tracklistings for all three reissues there.

  • Video: The Boston Phoenix's On The Download blog has some great video from the show, with full clips of opener "1001 Pleasant Dreams", "2wice", and "Academy Fight Song". But be warned, going to that page will simultaneously auto-load all three clips, all of which start with a loud advertisement. So turn down your audio first unless you want to be driven slightly insane.

Bill T. Miller put together a six-minute video of live footage from the Burma For Burma show as well, including parts of the cause-related speeches that were given before and during the show.

Matador Records' Matablog has been a treasure trove of cool Burma content leading up to the new releases: For audiophiles and the otherwise-curious, you can take a look at what went into remastering the definitive edition reissues straight from the originals in two video clips (part 1, part 2). They've also shared an old performance of "Eyes of Men", and a clip of "Red" from one of the bonus DVDs that is included with each reissued album. Check out this five-minute EPK (electronic press kit) about the new editions as well (quicktime file). For all of the Matablog's Burma-related content, go here.

And don't forget to hit up a full MoB YouTube search for tons of fan-shot clips.

  • Photos: All my shots from the show are here. Bill T. Miller has some shots of his own here. Check out the full Mission of Burma Flickr tag search.

  • More: Buy the remastered Mission of Burma Definite Editions relatively cheaply from Newbury Comics. The Boston Herald wrote about the band's legacy here.

  • Upcoming shows: Four scheduled for the summer, all in Europe. Check the band's tour page for details on May/June shows in Barcelona, Bordeaux, Nantes, and Paris.

Mp3s: Syme live in Boston

Despite my missing out on the now-in-progress South By Southwest, I'm able to still reap a few benefits, with the ripple-effect of bands being more active this time of year, and scheduling tours around their Austin appearances. Case in point: A second stateside visit from Norwegian four-piece Syme, with a few Northeasterly shows leading up to their journey south and west for a couple SxSW shows. Fortunately, Boston was one of those scheduled pit stops.

The band played our Paradise Lounge last week, and pulled in a pretty solid crowd considering they were a late addition with an early opening slot. Their set included a couple songs from their excellent 2005 "Swing Swing" album, along with new tracks that will hopefully appear on their next album, and likely in the setlists for their two SxSW appearances in Austin this weekend...
  • Tomorrow night, Friday, March 14th @ Chain Drive
  • Saturday, March 15th @ Esther's Follies (w/The Soundtrack of Our Lives)
  • Here's Syme's full Boston set from last week, shared with their kind permission. Give a listen (especially to my current fave, "250/300"), and do go see them if you're down in Austin this weekend. Then again, if you're in Austin, I sure hope you're too busy to be reading this blog...

    SYME

    06. Krdish

    Some Syme-centric links...
  • Their official site, which redirects to their MySpace page, and here's their Karisma Records page..

  • Additional Audio: Apart from the streaming MySpace tracks, check out another live set I shared back in October (during their first North American jaunt). You can also listen to more live songs and a few interview clips over at JamNow.

  • Video: A clip for the song "Planetarium".

  • Photos: All of my Syme shots are here, and you can see some fantastic shots from their recent Toronto show thanks to David Waldman.

  • Upcoming tourdates: See above for the details on their two SxSW appearances this weekend. After that, they're heading back home to get to work on their next record. File that info under: "something to look forward to".

Mp3s: Wye Oak live in Cambridge

Every year, for the past dozen years and to varying degrees of seriousness, I think "This will be the year I make it to South By Southwest." Hasn't happened yet, but... someday. As the showcases get scheduled, more great bands get added, and the parties get planned, I sit here in Boston getting buried under a mountain of digital SxSW-specific promo emails, and wait for my fellow bloggers to write about what a great time was had. Sigh.

But if I was there, one of the bands I'd be sure to see is Wye Oak, who are part of the Merge Records showcase on Friday night at the Parish. I was fortunate enough to catch the Baltimore-based duo of Jenn & Andy when they played here in Cambridge a couple weeks back, and they've kindly allowed me to share their performance here on the 'Nac.

Their seven song set naturally showed off songs from their upcoming debut, "If Children", but they also threw in a couple new numbers and a reworked older one. If you're down in Austin this week, make sure you get to the Merge showcase early, as they're playing second, with Portastatic up first. And go ahead, rub it in... let me know how great it was. I can take it.

    Wye Oak

    Some Wye Oak links...
  • Their official site, MySpace page, and Merge page.

  • Additional Audio: The band's site has no less than four Mp3s from "If Children". And their MySpace page adds another for streaming. Generous, they are. Also generous: Aural States and Baltimore Taper, who teamed up to offer another full Wye Oak live set, recorded earlier this month, along with an interview.

  • Video: Here's something very cool - Watch Andy play through the entirety of "Warning", showing off his drum n' keys multi-tasking skills, courtesy of MyDrumLesson.com. There are also a whole slew of live clips up on YouTube.

Mp3s: Bob Mould live in Boston

Bob Mould, whose "District Line" disc has just been released, visited Boston last November in support of his "Circle of Friends" live DVD, treating a sold-out Paradise Lounge crowd to an intimate half-acoustic/half-electric set. He pulled songs not just from his distant Husker Du past and his own solo history, but gave us a peek into his immediate future (with District Line's "Again and Again") and even a preview of what's still to come, with a couple tracks that may appear on his next release, one of which was written just three weeks prior. Yes, he's been cranking them out, and in fact has an entire album ready to go (and probably out in '09) thanks to a broken foot that left him laid up last summer. Hey, I'd never wish any harm on my faves, but a bonus album is one hell of a silver lining to immobility.

Bob asked that I not share the super-new stuff (he'll unveil those when they're good and ready), but here's the rest of his solo set. Pick up "District Line" here, the excellent "Circle of Friends" DVD over here, and grab tickets for his upcoming March 12th full-band show inside the Paradise's main room right here. More Bob merch can be purchased here.

Happy Birthday Cal: A Live Mp3 Compilation

Two years ago today, Janet and J. Robbins welcomed son Callum into their music-filled world. To Cal, Janet and J. are just mom & dad, but to the rest of us, he's got veritable rock stars for parents, with J. having played in the seminal Jawbox, Burning Airlines, & Government Issue, and alongside Janet in Channels. Hanging around the recording studio will surely feel completely normal to the little guy, as J. spends much of his days in his Baltimore-based Magpie Cage studio, tracking and mixing a whole bunch of damn good bands.

As recounted here, 8 months or so after Cal was born he was diagnosed with the genetic disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or Type 1 SMA. While research into a cure is ongoing, right now it's incurable, and those who live with it are in for costly therapy and assistive medical devices. That's why, as word spread of Cal's diagnosis, the Robbins' friends and fans rallied with benefit shows, the excellent "For Callum" compilation, and even a benefit disc of Jawbox covers performed on cello.

One of those benefits, which took place over two nights last summer at Somerville's PA's Lounge, brought a bunch of Boston-area (and one NY) bands together for Cal's cause. And regardless of reason behind it, the shows were easily in my musical highlights for the year: Solo sets from Mark Robinson (Teenbeat/Unrest/Air Miami/Flin Flon) and Drew O'Doherty. Duos in the form of Dan & Liz from Ida, benefit organizer Geoff Farina (Karate/Glorytellers) & Jodi Buonanno reunited as Secret Stars, and Chris Brokaw with Geoff, dusting off some old-tyme covers. Then the full band performances: the mighty trio Helms, who were absolutely on fire that night, the noisy Neptune, who gave us a bunch of new songs, and an admittedly ramshackle but rockin' set from Thalia Zedek and her band, with Hilken Mancini (Shepherdess/Fuzzy) guesting on a song or two.

Ida served up some old faves, new ones from their almost-out "Lovers Prayers" album (one they played, "Lolo Sang", is the vinyl-only closing track), and a couple children's songs for Cal. Secret Stars gave us magical versions of their best work. Drew played stuff from his "Starts", along with the track he contributed to the "For Callum" compilation. And Mark Robinson even sang us the seldom-heard Lowell, Massachusetts theme song. All in all, eight performances over two nights filled with special moments, appreciative fans, and many warm vibes for a worthy cause.

So here's the deal: I'd like to let those benefit performances keep on giving. As a present for their growing boy, I'm offering up this "Happy Birthday Cal" Mp3 compilation, with 18 live songs from most of bands who played at last summer's Somerville shows, with their permission. And if you download it, or have ever downloaded and enjoyed any of my recordings here on the 'Nac, I'd be psyched if you'd consider dropping a few dollars for the Robbins family in the Paypal bucket (by clicking the button below), or send a check if Paypal isn't your thing (info at DeSoto). I've just kicked things off with a donation of my own, so as you spend time listening to all the great songs below, pretend you were there at the shows with me, and send a cover charge their way...

More Mp3s: Kristin Hersh + Tanya Donelly @ the Brattle - Part 2

As I promised last week, here's my recording of the second Kristin Hersh & Tanya Donelly team-up show from the Brattle Theatre last October. I wrote about the Muses-filled day here, and you can still download the full earlier show there as well.

For the uninitiated (or if you've never visited the 'Nac before), Kristin and Tanya were longtime Throwing Muses bandmates, and the step-sisters have each since been involved in their own projects (Tanya releases solo material, fronted Belly, and helped start the Breeders, Kristin releases solo stuff, and plays in 50 Foot Wave as well). They got together last fall to play these two special gigs in Cambridge, Mass., treating us to separate solo sets and then joining together for some old faves.

I actually felt this second show was the stronger of the two, performance-wise, and the setlists contained a bunch of personal faves that didn't make the first: Kristin's "Sundrops" and "Spain", Tanya's "Slow Dog" and "Acrobat", and the two performing Muses faves "Counting Backwards" and "Rabbit's Dying" together. Anyone who was there might notice the absence of Kristin's "Husk" and "Banks of the Ohio" below, and this can be blamed on batteries (like I said, it was a long day of music), which died during "Speed & Sleep". Fortunately I noticed soon enough to only miss a couple songs, and you can make up for it by grabbing them from Kristin's earlier set here.

    Mp3s: Kristin Hersh + Tanya Donelly @ the Brattle - Part 1

One of my favorite live shows of last year was actually a two-fer that totalled six sets of music: Former Throwing Muses bandmates, and stepsisters, Tanya Donelly (who also fronted Belly, and helped start the Breeders) and Kristin Hersh (who's also in 50 Foot Wave) played two gigs at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Mass., and the shows included a solo set from each along with a truly special team-up on a batch of older TM faves.

If you've been reading the 'Nac for any length of time, you know that the Muses own space in a warm little corner of my heart, so I'll spare you any maudlin reflections and get to the songs. First up: The 6pm show, with Tanya and Kristin's first solo sets of the day, along with their first collaborative set. Next Monday I'll be sharing the entire 9PM second show.

And writing out this next bit might make it seem more real: This Friday I'll be a humble fly on the studio wall when Kristin Hersh and Throwing Muses drummer David Narcizo get together to record a few songs. I'll have my laptop with me and will be, barring any schedule changes or technical difficulties, liveblogging the afternoon, with words, photos, maybe even a little audio and video. Hopefully I'll just grab a seat, get the heck outta their way, and be able to share this rare experience with fellow fans.

So, yes, it's a Muses-heavy week here on the 'Nac. Enjoy this first fix, and come back Friday and next Monday for much more...
