Mp3s: A Jewcy Party in NYC

Posted on January 11, 2006 at 4:10 pm | 1 Comment

So here’s a post that’s a little outta left field for the Almanac: A collection of mp3 recordings of various random sets from A Jewcy Chanukah, a Hanukkah party-slash-benefit-slash-concert that took place a month ago down in Manhattan. It’s left-fieldish for a few reasons: 1) None of the indie-alt-pop-rock I usually share here. 2) Hanukkah ended well over a week ago, so it’s not all that timely. and 3) I’m totally not Jewish. No, marrying one (especially a very lapsed one) did not grant me honorary membership… hell, Amie didn’t even accompany me during my brief trip to NYC. But I was far from the only gentile at Crobar that night.

I had plans on each evening of my four day getaway except that Sunday, December 11th, so when I saw that tickets were still available to see this truly bizarre lineup (Perry Farrell, Northern State, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, comedians Todd Barry, Rachel Dratch, & more), I couldn’t resist being there… if only to witness weirdness. And very weird it was.

First SNL’s Rachel Dratch and semi-MC Billy Eichner of Creation Nation came up and introduced “DJ Peretz”, aka Janes Addiction’s Perry Farrell, aka Perry Bernstein. Decked out in tan dresspants and a pastel collared shirt, he looked very non-Perry, and what followed was… just bizarre. He ‘spun’ three songs while he occasionally sang along, randomly throwing in curious quotes like “I’m 43 but I still want a bike for Hannukah!”. And which songs did he play? Something that sounded like his own cover of “Walk On The Wild Side“, Roy Orbison’s “You Got It“, and ELO’s “Strange Magic“. Like I said… bizarre.

After Farrell left the stage, Eichner teased us with his eventual reappearance and a promised performance of “Jane Says“, but we were long gone before that took place. Does anyone really need to hear that song again, like, ever? The answer is no.

Next up: Daily Show writer Eric Drysdale & his sister, Second City Chicago’s Rebecca Drysdale, who gave us a little bar-slash-bat mitzah comedy…

The Drysdales were followed by comedian Todd Barry…

Then came the first musical action of the evening, the three girls (and one guitar-playin’ guy) of Northern State. Three songs from Hesta, Sprout, & Spero: One from their ‘All City’ album, one from the ‘Dying In Stereo’ EP, and a new one called ‘The Things I’ll Do’….

Rachel Dratch returned to the stage for her Jewified version of ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’…

And finally, at least as far as we were concerned, it was time for Triumph (aka Robert Smigel and his hand). Great stuff, roasting the hipster ‘New Jew’ movement, the party itself, and most enthusiastically, cats. Yes, when you get to the end of this mp3 you’ll be treated to the Triumph song ‘Cats Are C*nts‘. Oh, the profanity…

There’s some great stuff here – so glad you captured and shared it. A real ‘mitzvah’ as they say. (you can ask Amie for a translation. Muchas Gracias.
