Mp3s: Sigur Rs live in Boston

I could consult a thesaurus, but I still doubt I’d find the right words to describe last Thursday’s Sigur Rs at the beautiful Boston Opera House. Like-minded fans of this Icelandic band know what they’re capable of, and they delivered that evening with the help of the four-piece AminA, who not only provided strings for Sigur Rs, but opened up the night with a mesmerizing set of their own.

I hope to share the AminA set soon, but for now here’s the full Sigur Rs show. Thirteen songs over ten files, as I kept the linked ones together rather than split ’em up…

For the detail minded, this was recorded using a Sony MZ-RH10 minidisc recorder and a Sony ECM-719 stereo clip-on mic, transferred to pc as .wav files, edited in Soundforge, and converted to 192kbps mp3s. Also, for the audio-snobs, I’ll try to post some original wav-to-flac files at dimeadozen when I find the time (i.e. I have no idea when), or you could always ask for a straight burn.
As always, the files will be up for a few weeks, maybe a bit longer.

Oldboy on DVD: Honest Commentary
Posted on September 15, 2005 at 7:52 am | No Comments
I’m not real big on dvd commentary, for the simple reason that I’d rather be watching a movie I’ve never seen than sitting through one I have, but with someone talkin’ over it. Free time’s too precious, and there’s too much of the unseen out there to fill it. Though I’ll make a rare exception if I read about a commentary track that’s particularly insightful or amusing.
When it comes to other dvd extras, I’m a sucker for gag reels, maybe the occasional documentary, and of course, unaired episodes of tv shows (the Firefly and Wonderfalls sets being a couple recent faves). Deleted scenes, though? Could take ’em or leave ’em, depending on the filmmaker.
When I sat down and devoured the just-released dvd of South Korean director Chan-wook Park’s flat-out excellent Oldboy a few days ago, I was simply starving for more, so I actually ended up watching all the bonus material. And boy, am I glad I did.
It’s probably a combination of the director’s refreshing candor and the lost-subtlety of the translated subtitles that makes the following commentary so perfect. Here’s what Chan-wook Park had to say over the very first deleted scene from his Oldboy dvd…
So aren’t you just dying to hear what he had to say next?
