Pseudo Spring

It’s a tad too early to start talking spring, but it does feel like the city is waking up a little today. The sun’s shining brightly, and the mid-40 temps feel downright balmy compared to where we’ve been for months. A lunchtime walk to the commons, rays on my face, squirrels all around… exactly what I needed.

Even though they still owe me 50 bucks, I picked up the new Pilot to Gunner disc last week, and it’s rocking me even more than I expected. Years ago, having Padden’s voice stuck in my head might have given me nightmares (“monk! boneless b! monk!”), but I’ve gotta say, I can’t get track four (Hey Carrier) outta my brain. Seems to be stuck on repeat.
Their first record, as much as I dug it, got old too fast because I’d seen them play the songs live so many times. This time around, on “Get Saved“, a lot of the tracks are new to me, so these first bunch of listens have hit me harder. I remember a few from shows, sure, but not all of ’em by heart. This album also has it over their first in both production (by J. Robbins) and song dynamics… there’s more going on, more to dig into. It’s been a long wait, but they’ve got something pretty great on their hands. I’m psyched for ’em. Doesn’t mean I still don’t want that 50 bucks. I’ll except payment in a variety of forms, Scott.
Whoa: Sebadoh, J. Mascis, & Sonic Youth?!?

A dream triple bill if ever there was one… and it’s really happening.
Actually, there’s seven bands in all at this April 30th benefit for Easthampton’s Community Resources for People with Autism. Doors open at 5pm that Friday night at Smith College’s Greene Hall, and the music starts at 6. Tentative order of the bands…
Chemical Wedding
Claudia Malibu
Steve Westfield
Lo Fine
Sebadoh
J. Mascis
Sonic Youth
Apparantly tickets can only be snagged at Northampton’s Turn It Up! or Easthampton’s Night Owl Records, but Turn It Up! doesn’t have any yet, and doesn’t know when they’re getting ’em.
Night Owl is taking pre-orders, though, so get on the phone to (413) 527-2444 and put your name down. They’ll take your credit card info and charge you $19.50 per ticket ($18 plus $1.50 non-refundable service charge)… a bargain at any price. There’s room for 2000 people in the hall, and it’s general admission. Think it’ll sell out? You betcha. Two of those tickets are now mine… Westward, ho!
