[Live MP3s] Dirty On Purpose & Tom Thumb in Cambridge, MA 2005

Posted on June 28, 2005 at 2:42 pm | No Comments

Thursday night, June 16th was a hectic one. Rushed from an late downtown work shift over to Cambridge’s Central Square area in the rain, hoping to arrive in time to catch not only NYC’s Dirty On Purpose at TT’s, but as much of Drew O’Doherty and Tom Thumb’s sets as I could around the corner at ZuZu.

DoP hadn’t hit the stage yet, so I was lucky to see Mr. O’Doherty play a few songs from his still-in-progress solo record. One of ’em was the beautiful ‘Oneway‘, which you can stream over at Drew’s MySpace page, another was called ‘Angels Live In Your Town‘. Really looking forward to the album, and to seeing Drew again when he opens for Joel RL Phelps and his Downer Trio at TTs on August 2nd.

As much as I wanted to stay at ZuZu, I had to get back to TTs in case Dirty On Purpose were up, and luckily I wandered in as their first song started. The rest of the set brought to mind lots of influences; from early-era Slowdive, to shades of Jersey City’s brilliant Spent, from Stars to a touch of Yo La Tengo. The mix was occasionally rough, as it can be at TTs, especially when a band’s vocals are on the softer side. The drums were also near the front right of the stage, so the cymbals often drowned out the guitars. Still a really good show, although I look forward to their return to Boston and another chance at a better mix.

I recorded all but the first song, and the band has kindly given me the ok to share ’em up…

A couple more photos here. Once they finished up (and once I bought my own copy of their excellent ‘Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow‘ EP, which you can grab here), it was back over to ZuZu to see if Tom Thumb & the Latter Day Saints were still playing. They’d been kind enough to send me their new ‘Kindermusik‘ EP, and I wanted to see ’em in person. I was able to hear a few songs before the long work day caught up with me (and before a very talky, super-drunk, and seriously obnoxious girl showed up and sat next to me), and I headed home.

Tom Thumb singer/guitarist Andy Arch said it was cool to post a couple tracks from the set, so here ya go…
